Why Makaton matters
Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using signs and symbols. Many people then drop the signs or symbols naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech.
What we do at Triangle Pre-School
At Triangle Pre-School we use Makaton regularly during the day – in songs, routines and play – to help all children take part and connect with others.
Every week we learn new Makaton signs that reflect things children are interested in or use every day. You’ll find our weekly Makaton signs displayed on the notice board in the hall, and we encourage you to practise them at home too.
Please refer to and download this comprehensive list of Makaton signs so you can practise with your child at home.

Using Makaton supports inclusion — it helps children who are not yet speaking, have unclear speech or additional communication needs to express themselves and take part in everyday activities with confidence. It also benefits all children by encouraging listening, interaction and shared understanding.
